THE ARTIST

Barry's lifelong fascination with tools and machines began during his time as an instrument maker and later as a tradesman in the engineering and manufacturing sectors. Although he spent most of his career in the private sector, it was a company-wide competition that truly sparked his passion for woodworking.

.

How did you get into working with wood?
While working for Arbortech, the company held yearly woodworking competitions that encouraged all employees to participate. This is where I was first introduced to their power carving tools, and I quickly discovered the incredible creativity involved in shaping and carving wood. As a lifelong lover of art in various forms, I was immediately drawn in.

What inspires your creations?
My love for the natural world inspires my work. I'm drawn to carving the organic forms of trees, birds, and plants, often weaving them together into a single piece. Looking back, I wish I'd found this art form sooner, but I'm a firm believer that it’s better late than never. I'm grateful to Arbortech and their excellent tools for helping me discover my creative side later in life.

What would you tell your younger self starting out on your artistic journey?
For many years, time was my biggest enemy. Balancing long hours at work and raising a family meant I couldn't fully pursue this passion. But with retirement came the gift of time, and I finally had the opportunity to dive into power carving.

What is your favourite Arbortech tool and why?
Choosing a favourite Arbortech tool is tough, as they all have their purpose. However, for my style of carving, the Precision Carving System is my top choice, allowing me to achieve intricate details. It's a close call with the Turbo Plane and the 50mm Mini Carver, which are also essential to my process.

If you were a type of wood what would you be and why?
I'd have to be Marri. It's a joy to work with - not too hard, holds together well, has a beautiful grain, and sands to a lovely finish. For my style of carving it is the precision carving system as I can shape more to size detail, closely followed by the Turbo Plane and 50mm Mini carver.
